Fair Play New York Blades Deirdre Martin Books
I tried to like the book I really did however I felt the book wasn't really a love story, it was more of a journal following two different people who sometimes crossed paths. I found the leading lady to be infuriating with her wishy washy approach to the male protagonist. She also lives in a fantasy world where if the guy doesn't meet "When Harry met Sally" level criteria they were in a sense not worthy; yet she puts up with a different guy for months who seems to not show much different because he fits the fantasy of a rom com leading man its silly and frustrating to read. The leading guy was sweet and nice but there is no man that patient out there who would wait years in hopes a girl who won't give him the time of day would love him. The book is also about 80 pages too long this story moved at the pace of a snail and could have been finished in 280-300 tops. The love story seriously didn't come into play until about two places in the book with about 100 pages of nothing in between. I liked the first book in the series but don't think I'll be spending my money on another I don't want to risk another boring 350 page diary entry.Tags : Amazon.com: Fair Play (New York Blades) (9780425194577): Deirdre Martin: Books,Deirdre Martin,Fair Play (New York Blades),Berkley,0425194574,Romance - Contemporary,Hockey players,Hockey teams - New York,Love stories,New York (N.Y.),Restaurants - Public relations,Women public relations personnel,FICTION Romance Contemporary,FICTION Romance General,FICTION Romance Romantic Comedy,FICTION Romance Sports,Fiction,Fiction - Romance,Fiction-Romance,MASS MARKET,Romance - General,RomanceModern,Romance: Modern
Fair Play New York Blades Deirdre Martin Books Reviews
After reading the first book, Body Check, I anxiously awaited the continuation/sequel involving two characters from the first. While the book was quite entertaining, it was not what I expected. The male "hero" is a great guy, but the female heroine is quite neurotic. I think any real guy would have given up on her, but not Michael. I had trouble connecting with Theresa. I'm not sure why. Theresa's initial rejection of Michael in the book has to do with an attempted rape by a fellow teammate of Michael's. Somewhere in there, she decides that he's her type because he's Italian. Well, so is she! There's also this loser lawyer who is in the way and trying to take advantage of Theresa. I did like the book as a whole and I'd read another novel by Ms. Martin.
TONS of typos, transposed words. This publisher, editor needs a live human to do the final read through prior to release in any format.
My only other complaint is there was no language translation, if I'm going to swear in Italian, I'd really like to know exactly what I'm saying.
Never read this author before, but will be looking for more books by Deirdre Martin soon. I highly recommend this book.
The heroine, if you can call her that, ruined this book for me. She is a very judgmental character who stereotypes all the males in the book. On top of that she seems to be to good for and embarrassed by her family. This author has books that are worth reading please don't let this one stop you from giving her a second chance or choosing a different one.
I almost didn't read this book because one reviewer said Theresa was just too annoying, but I'm so glad I made the decision for myself. I LOVED this book! Michael was so wonderful and Theresa was so believable. All too often we get to see our heroine forgive and forgive and forgive as our hero grapples with coming to his senses. Well, it's a nice role reversal as Michael treats Theresa like the gem he thinks she is. I completely understood her desire for something different than what she grew up with and how she came full circle. My only regret is that when they finally get together, the book is over!
"Fair Play" picks up from Deidre Martin's "Body Check", focusing on Theresa Falconetti's story line. Theresa was sexually assaulted by a hockey player, which she sued, and whose settlement money helped her and Janna start their own PR firm. This experience, however, has wrecked havoc on her love life, and she's been unable to have a healthy romantic relationship since then.
Michael Dante, a renowned hockey star, has been interested in Theresa for years. She, however, wants nothing to do with him because one, he's Italian, and two, he's a hockey player who will constantly remind her of her recent trauma. Michael goes above and beyond to prove that he's the right man for her, efforts that seem to fail throughout a large portion of the story.
Due to its premise and central plot, "Fair Play" seems to lack a lot of the ingredients that make for a great romantic novel. The main characters never seem to get together for a large portion of the story, and by large I mean more than 90% of the book. There were no steamy scenes and no romantic connection between the characters. I personally couldn't identify with the heroin at all. She didn't give Michael a chance for reasons she herself couldn't explain. I was disappointed that I was close to finishing the book and the characters never seemed to get over simple obstacles to be together and establish a romance.
"Fair Play" was a quick read, and author's great writing did shine through the story. However, it's lack of romance will keep me from recommending to others.
Theresa and her best friend have opened their own PR business, she is working hard to put the past behind her and get on with her life. Michael is best friends with Theresas best friends' husband and he has wanted Theresa for a really long time. Theresa wrote him off the first night they met, when he forgot to put his teeth in. Theresa was assaulted by one of his teammates and now she has a firm no athletes rule. Michael hires Theresa to promote his families restaurant and hopefully to spend some more time with her. Theresa tentatively starts to date Michael but has problems trusting him. Michael tries to convince Theresa that he really is the guy for her, before she makes the mistake of choosing the boring nonsense other guy. Theresa is strong, bull headed, wounded and prejudiced; she thinks she wants something that is wrong for her. Michael is awesome, he does everything to make Theresa laugh and he tries his hardest to help her get over her assault. They really are perfect for each other; they have some humorously embarrassing moments. They also have a few bad fights and I really thought Theresa was going to lose her chance and Michael would give up on her. I liked the book and loved how the author dealt with the emotional issues that came from Theresa's assault. I did start getting annoyed with the main characters and Theresa started to become too much of a bitch to make me love this book. I really did like it though.
