Before We Set Sail Chika Ezeanya Books

Not being a very fast reader, I just finished savoring Before We Set Sail. I must say, the book is a bestseller and classical in itself. It's so refreshing and authentic especially for me as an Aro-man. The account of Olaudah reinforces the modern controversy surrounding the role of Ibieniukpabi in the slave trade saga. Not to talk about famous families in Arochukwu whose foundation of wealth is traceable to the slave trade. Another point was the use of kidnapping in catching human beings as slaves for money. Though a fiction, I believe it existed in South-East Nigeria in the 18th century and today kidnapping for money is still prevalent in that region. It is indeed the same spirit at work!
I congratulate Chika Ezeanya heartily for this masterpiece. I learnt so much from Chika Ezeanya's indepth account of Olaudah's journey of life. I was moved to tears sometimes to imagine man's inhumanity to man. Olaudah no doubt, is a gifted, intelligent soul. Am glad, he received Christ in the midst of all his travails. But, I continue to wonder how Chika Ezeanya was able to put Olaudah's life story together in such great detail and clarity - bringing reality to a fiction! By the way, has the author been able to confirm the present location of Essaka and Otubong?.Before We Set Sail

Before We Set Sail Chika Ezeanya Books Reviews

If you are ever curious as to what living in Africa was pre and during slavery, this book is right for you. Chika gifts us a refreshing take on the lives of our great great great grand parents before they set sail on the slave ships. I see this book as an affirmation of our core substance, our industry and productivity and our pride as a people. African Americans usually refer to the period of slavery as our past. Before we set sail takes us beyond slavery to a place and time in our history - beautiful yet complex and multifaceted, a place we can truly call home.
Its was a great story about the man who will find his from africa into slavery. I hope this could become a movie. It touches on a lot aspects of being african and the thought-provoking experience into slavery. A great book to read.
Ordered and received my copy of this book in April before I traveled to Anambra state Nigeria in May this year, and had a great time visiting both markets (eke Uke and Abatata) mentioned in this book, could very well imagined my self in the period mentioned in this book as both markets seem to have stood still in time. Both my wife and I read the book and can not wait for the follow up, which we think should be written soon. Great work, Chika. I highly recommend this book, for any body that is interested in African story or history.
Chika Ezeanya depicts the story of a young brave child, Olaudah, who through courage and strong-will survives the trouble of his time, slavery in Africa. The young hero, through his eyes, tells us what life was like around him. After reading the novel, I see similarities between Oladuah and Frederick Douglas around the same age. Both were intelligent, crafty, learned how to write at young ages, and lots more. This novel also brings into light the horrific nature and tragedy of slavery in Africa. Chika has taken us all back in time to what appears to have occurred not too long ago. I am sure in some parts of Africa, or in the world, there are living stories of such tragedy e.g. Lost boys of Sudan. Anyone who is interested in the way of life or culture of Africans should really get this novel. It is very educative and a great read.
