I couldn't put it down. I never can. CJ Cherryh writes masterpieces. I lose sleep when I read her novels. This doesn't surprise me. I won't go into the plot. You can read the description. When you open a Cherryh book, you know you're going to get fed a meal of intrigue and machinations. While some move up front, others are so subtle they hit you blindsided. Once in a while, she just loves to pull you out of your pleasant slumber and knock you off the bed! Looking at the window for any shadow! She also loves to hit you where you least expect it.
I was expecting a fun ride through the continuation of the details of the series, from the Atevi angle, seeing what happened after the last novel, as CJ Cherryh always gives us that, never to disappoint. How the south was connecting through the seas, legislature continuing, how Cajeiri was growing into his own man, and the post-guild restructuring.
However, WOW, she took off the cap! Human gloves off! Kabuki theater style between human factions!
I didn't expect that. Yes, I knew the visitors were coming, but...Wow! I cannot wait to see how she pulls Bren into the middle of that fight, and how the humans deal with each other. The humans in space and the Mospheirans are so alien to one another!
Thinking of what can happen when who is coming will get here! She always makes me chew my talons to nubs.
Meanwhile, the chilly breakfast and lights in the sky, reminded me of Foreigner, the first book in the series, when Illisidi invited Bren for tea, and a not so fun chat with Cenedi. :) Hey Bren, a chilly breakfast on the patio is a BAD OMEN! When will you learn, Bren?! Avoid chilly breakfasts! .

Tracker Foreigner C J Cherryh Books Reviews
It's been six "Foreigner" novels and eight years since we last saw the kyo, the mysterious and xenophobic aliens that chased humans out of their neighboring space. Now, they've been spotted in atevi space, approaching the atevi Earth for what one hopes will be a friendly, pleasant visit.
As is typical for each arc of this series, the first novel is all setup. Bren Cameron, our human protagonist, believes that there is nothing more important at this point than putting on a united front, showing the kyo that inter-species communication and peaceful cooperation are both possible and desirable. The problem is that, while human-atevi relations are relatively stable and amicable, intra-species human relations are doing less well. The main flash point involves the 5,000 human refugees from Reunion, the light-years-distant space station that the kyo forced the humans to evacuate. Overcrowding on the station, lingering historical anger about the ancestors of the Mospheirans and the ancestors of the Reunion refugees, and the actions of opportunists on all sides threaten the peace and the functioning of the local station.
Political maneuvering on Earth and the heavens is, as always in these novels, at the foreground. In the background is the maturation of young Cajeiri, heir to the atevi ajinate. Cajeiri's fraught relationship with his mother is stretched to the limit first by the birth of his sister and then by the need for him to travel to space once again, as one of the atevi who first communicated with the kyo. Cherryh has always emphasized how the political is also personal.
This remains an unusual series, both for Cherryh and for sci-fi in general. A 16-book series that is thoughtful, focused on social and political relations, action-oriented but not militaristic or especially violent, moderately paced ... there really isn't anything else like it.
Bottom line Of course you have to read it. Are you going to stop now? When the aliens have finally returned? Don't be foolish.
If one were looking for an entry point that did not require starting the series from scratch, this is the book to do so. After several planetside volumes that needed a libretto to keep track of the backstories, conspiracies within conspiracies and general complexity, this one reboots back to offplanet, which simplifies the need for such past references. So the author was able to do small data dumps while keeping the action smoothly flowing. As with many books in this series, little happens on one level and giant changes occur on deeper levels. One cannot list them without spoilers, but I was repeatedly surprised, amused and delighted. What is even better is that, step by step, this is ceasing to be Bren's story and instead becoming the story of the maturation of the 'Young Gentleman' and his two species association.
I was so eager to read this, since no matter how much I searched before it was released, I didn't know what the damned plot was going to be. Now I've read it over two times and I love it. Before I read it I kept thinking "Please Please the kyo come to visit". So the start disappointed me until Jase told Bren about the critical problem aboard the station between the two human groups. Then I thought the novel was just about that topic. I was astounded when Jase said a ship has been detected. From then on until the end, I was constantly delighted and enthralled by the increasingly complex and stressful mix of the human problems with the imminent arrival of the kyo. Damn you C. J. Cherryh, I am conflicted in my feelings toward you. One part of me is so happy with this novel, the other part is infuriated that I'm left wondering what the hell comes next and that I have to wait for a year to find out. Keep it up!!!
